KaBOOM!

Recently my daughter and I visited the DC headquarters of KaBOOM!, a very cool non-profit that builds playgrounds (their vision statement: “a great place to play within walking distance of every child in America”).

KaBOOM! is housed in the basement of a fairly nondescript and aesthetically-challenged office building in Van Ness, in northwest DC. The contrast between the elevator and sterile hallway that make up the approach to their office and the colorful scene of busy bright-eyed folks working amidst examples of playground equipment that emerges when you open their door is quite dramatic.

I was lucky enough to get a tour because my friend Ted is their director of Business and Brand Development. He is actually a founding member of Kaboom! and according to his online bio he is officially known on the books as employee 001.

KaBOOM seems to be doing tremendously well and will have built at least one playground in every state, scores of them in many states.

I do not often think “wow, this seems like a great organization” -- but I did think so at KaBOOM!

hi nathaniel - remember me? blast from the past - i was at MIT with you and Connie. this will be brief because I to put two kids to sleep - I have two boys, graham and avery, 3 and 1 (and am having a third boy in july!?!? - hard to believe). t turned 40 last month - like you (i read a couple of your blog entries). i finished my degree in 2000 - i never thought it would happen because it sure was a long hard road. i got a job teaching American politics at University of Florida. so here I am living in Gainesville. go gators!

drop me a line sometime, and say hi to Connie. i still remember taking that elections class with steve ansolabehere - you and i and one other student, an undergrad. and i remember how beautiful connie was - does she still have the long hair? it sounds like you have a really interesting job. i don't do much practical politics myself, but would like to get more involved - have been too busy with kids and the tenure track. i actually published a book on corruption in the american states last year! there are things that grate on me about academia but overall i love it, certainly the teaching part and some of the research i do.
i keep in touch with a few MIT folks - jocelyn crowley in particular, don't know if you knew her.
well take care!
